Joint Sports Pavilion Proposal for Darlington Oval

Discussions have been going on for some time between the various sporting clubs in Darlington concerning the construction of a joint sports pavilion at the oval that would service all / some of the local clubs.

Wayne Carrie, the tennis club president, has been representing the club on this matter at the Darlington Recreation Committee (DRC) meetings since December 2009. Following a survey of members in 2008, the tennis club’s position was that it would offer “in principle” support to any joint pavilion located adjacent to the tennis courts, provided it would not restrict the possible future development of a 5th tennis court.

Following discussion at the tennis club’s committee meeting in November 2010, when a number of potential sites were provided by the DRC, the committee decided that they would support the then preferred location of the joint pavilion adjacent to the tennis courts (site A on the plans printed in the Darlington Review), even at the expense of a 5th court. This was based on a desire to cooperate with the other sporting clubs in the community, the inadequacy of one extra court in solving the over subscription to the evening competitions (two would be needed to run more games concurrently), and the likelihood that an extra court would not be approved by the Shire in the foreseeable future.

However, at the subsequent DRC meeting in December 2010, following discussions with members and the new committee, the junior footy club, social cricket club, and a (very limited) public survey opposed this site for the joint pavilion, preferring the opposite end of the oval which could have better access, parking, viewing, etc, for their needs.

So although no decision has been reached at this stage, it now seems unlikely for there to be consensus in the near future for development of a combined pavilion at the tennis club site, and so the option of renovating the tennis clubrooms independently (using DTC funds) was discussed at the tennis club committee meeting in April. It was concluded that a proposal should be put forward to members at the next AGM (August).
